Erdely Claims WPIAL Gold Shooting One Under in the AA Individual Golf Championship

Going into the final round of the WPIAL AA individual golf championship at Butler Country Club, Nixen Erdely was even par and in fourth place. He finished the day one under to claim the WPIAL crown. Frazier has never had a WPIAL individual golf champion. When asked how being the first to conquer that feat felt, he said, “Great.” Erdely made quick work of the front nine, completing the first half of the tricky Butler Country Club unmarked finishing even.

“Going into today, my goal was to stay even. I knew if I hung around that spot, I’d have a pretty good shot,” Erdely said. “On the front, I played simple golf, seven pars, one bogey, and one birdie.”

Heading into hole eleven, Erdely was two above par and three strokes out of first place. Erdely went on a tear to finish out the back half, birdieing four out of the last seven holes and scoring par on two. Going into the 18th hole, he held a one-stroke lead over Ethan Dai of Quaker Valley, who had the lead all day.

“After a rough go of it on number ten, I just kept my pace from the front half and got some birdies on the last few holes,” Erdely said. “I was able to stay focused and get the job done on the back half.”

Erdely will continue his journey through the individual postseason, with the next stop being the white course at Penn State University on October 16th and 17th.
